Dave Barnhart goes to Culinary School

I start Culinary school tonight. There is a school here in Phoenix, Arizona designed for passionate amateur chefs who don’t want to give up their day jobs. I’m looking forward to taking my skills to the next level.

QSL Card From Navassa DXpedition

I’m Dave Barnhart, also known by my ham radio callsign, K7RPM.

I’ve been a ham radio operator since about 1979. I recently upgraded my license to the highest class amateur radio license: Amateur Extra Class. It was gratifying to know that my 60 year old brain could still learn highly-technical new material and pass a test on it.

DX means a station outside of the country where you are.  For some hams, ‘working DX’ is what they live for. For me it’s a more casual thing.  A DXpedition is a group of hams getting together and going to some remote spot, setting up a station, and operating.

Navassa Island is in the Caribbean and had not had a ham station for many years. During the two weeks that K1N was on the air from Navassa Island it was the most sought-after contact in the world.  EVERYBODY was trying to contact them.  Well, little old me with 100 watts of power and a wire antenna in the attic was able to do it. The other day I received a QSL card from them acknowledging the contact:

No, not those Dave Barnharts. I’m this Dave Barnhart. I live in Spring Valley, AZ since 2017. Prior to that I lived in Phoenix, AZ since 1966.

If you knew me in my 20’s you may have known me as Barney Barnhart instead of Dave Barnhart.

I am retired. As a ‘side hustle’ I manage and secure websites for successful entrepreneurs.
